Synthesis and Characterization of O-(carboxyl) Chitosan Schiff Base Derivatives and Study Antibacterial Activity

Abstract: 2-mercaptobenzothiazol [1] was reacted with anhydrous carbonate sodium and ClCH2COOH in distilled water to produce a compound [2]. Compound [3] was synthesized by reaction compound [2] with SOCl2 in benzene. O,N-chitosan derivative [4] had synthesized by reacted chitosan with compound [3] in trichloromethane and pyridine. O-chitosan derivative synthesized according to the method of Fischer and Speier from the reaction of chitosan with compound [2] in distilled water in acidic media to produce compound [5]. O-(… Show more

“…The FTIR spectrum of compound(1), had shown a new band of absorption at 1651cm -1 that has been attributed to the (C=N) of the imine group. The band of the absorption at 1595cm -1 that has been assigned for C=C of aromatic aldehyde 20 , and for the other polymers, the band values are illustrated in table1.…”

“…Chitosan is produced from chitin found in the cell walls of fungi, the cuticles of insects, and the shells of mollusks and crustaceans [1]. Chitosan can be defined as a cationic linear polysaccharide made up of specific N-acetylglucosamine units and (β 1,4) linked glucosamine units [2]. Since chitosan is unique in that it possesses qualities including biocompatibility, non-toxicity, antimicrobial activity, anticancer activity, and biodegradability, it could be employed effectively in a variety of biomedical applications [3,4].…”
