Synthesis and Characterization of PbBaGeO 4. -The novel title compound is prepared by solid state reaction of stoichiometric amounts of PbO, BaCO 3, and GeO2 (Pt crucible, 900 C, 2 d). PbBaGeO 4 crystallizes with the BaNdGaO4 structure type in the orthorhombic space group P212121 (Z = 4, single crystal XRD). The structure contains isolated GeO 4 tetrahedra, eightfold coordinated barium cations, and a pseudo--tetrahedrally coordinated lead cation exhibiting a stereoactive lone-pair of electrons.
