Synthesis and Characterization of PDMS‐, PVP‐, and PS‐Containing ABCBA Pentablock Copolymers

Abstract: Amphiphilic ABCBA pentablock copolymers based on PVP, PS, and PDMS were synthesized using a combination of ATRP and RAFT polymerizations. The PVP‐block‐PS‐block‐PDMS‐block‐PS‐block‐PVP pentablock copolymer was characterized using a variety of chromatography and spectroscopic methods which showed that a high degree of end group and molecular weight control can be achieved. Preliminary analysis of the aqueous solution behavior of the pentablock copolymer showed that it self‐assembles in water in order to shield … Show more

“…Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is a popular method for the synthesis of PDMS block copolymers . So we synthesized amphiphilic POEGMA‐PDMS‐POEGMA block copolymers by ATRP, using a macroinitiator α,ω‐dibromo polydimethylsiloxane (Br‐PDMS‐Br).…”

“…[205] Further examples of the synthesis of polymers by a combination of ATRP and RAFT have been reported. [185,525,618] This can involve preparing one block comprising a MAM by ATRP and then a second block comprising a LAM by RAFT.…”

“…Block copolymers comprising of “more‐activated monomers” (MAM) (e.g., styrene, (meth)acrylates, (meth)acrylamides, acrylonitrile) and “less‐activated monomers” (LAM) (e.g., vinyl acetate, N ‐vinylpyrolidone) are of synthetic value but challenging. This type of block copolymers has been prepared by a combination of ATRP ‐Ŧ‐ RAFT polymerization . For most cases, ATRP is used to prepare the first MAM block, then the initiator end functionality is converted to a xanthate end‐group, where the resultant macro‐RAFT agent is used to prepare the LAM block.…”
