Synthesis and Characterization of Phenol Furfural Resin from Moringa Oleifera Gum and Biophenol and Its Application in Styrene Butadiene Rubber

Abstract: The work presents the synthesis and characterization of a biowaste-based tackifying phenolic resin and its application in rubber. Biophenol−furfural resin was successfully synthesized from monosaccharides and their derivatives prepared from naturally occurring Moringa oleifera gum. Different resins synthesized by varying the biophenol to monosaccharide ratio exhibited the glass transition temperature in the range of 16−31 °C. Characterization of the resin was done by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1 … Show more

“…The prepared resin was characterized by FT-IR, NMR, TGA, and DSC. The resin improved the tack and the rheological properties of the rubber [ 149 ]. Formaldehyde was completely replaced by furfural and glucose in a recently reported research work.…”

“…On the other hand, slight changes were visible in the intensity of some absorption bands. In all spectra, an increased intensity of the band originating from the stretching vibration of the OH− (ν O-H ) groups was found [29]. The spectra obtained for the dust samples from the standard molding sand MS no.…”

“…Another characteristic band is the one corresponding to the deformation vibrations of C-H bonds characteristic for the furan ring, occurring around 885 cm −1 [30]. In the region of 1360 cm −1 , on the other hand, OH-group bands are visible, which correspond to vibrations originating from the furan or phenol ring [29]. These bands are characterized by a low intensity.…”

“…Adding an appropriate amount of furfural to a synthetic resin system can facilitate the resin polycondensation reaction, thereby improving the physical and mechanical properties [19,20]. At present, formaldehyde-free melamine resin, phenol-furfural resin, and resorcinol-furfural resin have been successfully prepared with furfural as a condensation agent [21][22][23][24]. The idea of using furfural to improve the degree of crosslinking of LPF resin adhesive was inspired by these studies.…”
