Synthesis and Characterization of Polymerized Ionic Liquids: Mechanical and Thermal Properties of a Novel Type of Hydrogels

Abstract: An easy and efficient route to synthesize gel materials based on polymeric ionic liquids (PILs) is presented. The radical polymerization of imidazolium (Im)‐based ionic liquids (ILs) bearing a vinyl group ([VEIm][Br], [VEIm][Ac], [VBIm][Br], [VBIm][Cl]) with crosslinker (CL) N,N′‐methylenebisacrylamide (Bis) in water results in polyionic liquid hydrogels. Thermal and mechanical properties (tensile and compression tests) are investigated and compared with two different types of hydrogels. One is a polyacrylamid… Show more

“…Figure shows the TGA curves for the P2 and XP2 copolymers, respectively. According to this study, the first slight weight loss in the range of 160°C to 210°C is attributed to the loss of adsorbed water in linear and cross‐linked IL copolymers . Additionally, degradation of cross‐linker occurred in this region for XPs.…”

“…According to this study, the first slight weight loss in the range of 160°C to 210°C is attributed to the loss of adsorbed water in linear and cross-linked IL copolymers. 39 Additionally, degradation of cross-linker occurred in this region for XPs. The second major weight loss (55%-70%) between 290°C and 350°C was mainly related to the degradation of the imidazolium groups.…”

“…More dynamic systems with greater freedom for ordered array such as continuous conduction pathways for ion migration were propitious to gain high conductivity value [25]. In addition, polymerization ionic liquid (PIL) membranes through unsaturated bonds in ionic liquid monomer polymerizing also contributed to the development of membrane electrolytes [16,[26][27][28]. Unfortunately, PIL membranes had to face a dilemma of the drop in conductivity by several orders of magnitude due to the confined ion mobility after polymerization.…”
