Five new linear Schiff base polymers having azomethine structures, ether linkages and extended aliphatic chain lengths with flexible spacers were synthesized by polycondensation of dialdehyde (monomer) with aliphatic and aromatic diamines. The formation yields of monomer and polymers were obtained within 75-92%. The polymers with flexible spacers of n-hexane were somewhat soluble in acetone, chloroform, THF, DMF and DMSO on heating. The monomer and polymers were characterized by melting point, elemental microanalysis, FT-IR, 1 HNMR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, thermogravimetry (TG), differential thermal analysis (DTA), fluorescence emission, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and viscosities measurement of their dilute solutions. The studies supported formation of the monomer and polymers and on the basis of these studies their structures have been assigned. The synthesized polymers were tested for their antibacterial and antifungal activities.

Recently, soluble poly(azomethine ester)s with good thermal stability and liquid crystalline properties are much sought after in opto-electronic field. One such attempt was to synthesize poly(azomethine ester)s with a pendent group. In this study, the newly synthesized diacid monomer benzalaniline 3'-4'dimethoxy terepthalic acid was condensed with two diol monomers to get the polymers with pendent benzylidene group. The diacid monomer was characterized by UV, IR, NMR and CHNS analysis. The polymers were characterized by IR, TGA, and for liquid crystalline property. Polymer-I showed the highest thermal stability upto 335˚C. Polymer-II exhibited liquid crystalline nature along with good solubility and thermal stability.

ABSTRACT. The conditions for oxidative condensation of 2-[(4-iodophenylimino)methyl]phenol (IPIMP) were studied with air and NaOCl as oxidants in an aqueous alkaline medium between 50 and 90 °C. Size exclusion chromatography (SEC) showed that the number-average molecular weight (Mn), weight-average molecular weight (Mw) and polydispersity index (PDI) values, respectively, were 1250, 1300 g mol -1 and 1.040 for oxidation with NaOCl and 2200, 2500 g mol -1 and 1.136 for oxidation by air. With the optimum reaction conditions, the yield of OIPIMP was found to be 67 % with NaOCl, and 29 % with air, as oxidant. The OIPIMP was characterized by 1 H-NMR, 13 C-NMR, FT-IR, UV-Vis and elemental analysis. Metal complexes of the oligomer were shown to be more thermally stable than OIPIMP itself.
