Synthesis and Characterization of Water Soluble Rosin-Polyethylene Glycol 1500 Derivative

Abstract: Abstract-This research aims to synthesize and characterize of rosin-polyethylene glycol derivatives from natural rosin and polyethylene glycol 1500 (PEG1500). In this research, reaction conditions for the synthesis of rosin-PEG derivatives such as catalyst type, catalyst concentration, reaction temperature and etc. were optimized. Chemical and physical properties of water soluble rosin (WSR) were characterized using FT-IR, 13 C-NMR, DSC, and GPC. It was found that water soluble rosin-PEG derivatives were succe… Show more

“…A rosin-PEG 1500 derivative was successfully synthesized from natural rosin and his PEG using ZnO 2% as catalyst and 2 mol of rosin at 250 °C for 9 h. These derivatives were completely water soluble and can be called water soluble rosins (WSRs). The resulting rosin PEG1500 derivative was completely water soluble, and the rosin PEG1500 derivative exhibited a melting point of 40.6 °C, which was lower than that of natural rosin [35].…”

“…Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a petroleum-based polymer that represents only one group -OH that is soluble in water. Hydrophilic polymers are used in ointments and supplements as a base, as a plasticizer in film coating, as supplemental emulsifiers, and in electrical applications [43].…”

“…The properties of derivatives of rosin-polyethylene glycol from rosin and PEG was studied [43]. The target of this reaction was the carboxylic group of rosin that reacted with the hydroxyl group of PEGs to form rosin-PEG as water soluble rosin derivatives via esterification reaction.…”
