Synthesis and Characterization of Zirconium Aluminophosphate. A New Cation Exchanger

Abstract: A new inorganic ion exchange sorbent, zirconium aluminophosphate, has been prepared with Na + ion exchange capacity (iec) equal to 2.10 mequiv/dry g. Its X-ray diffraction studies suggest that it is amorphous in nature. Its characterization has also been done by IR, TGA, and DSC so as to identify various functional groups and ion exchange sites present in the material. Further, various ion exchange studies such as determination of iec, elution behavior, pH titration, and distribution behavior have been perform… Show more

“…As seen from the IR spectra (Fig. 7), the pres- ence of external water within the TiP particles in addition to the strongly hydrogen-bonded OH or extremely strongly coordinated H 2 O is confirmed by the sharp peaks at 3500 and 1650 cm −1 [19,26]. The band from 1000 to 1020 cm −1 represents asymmetric stretching vibration of Ti-P-OH [27,28], and the weak band at 605-615 cm −1 is assigned to the deformation vibration for the Ti-O bond [29].…”

“…Based on the pH values before and after the exchange process, the milliequivalents of OH − consumed were determined. Milliequivalents of OH − ions consumed by ZrPS or ZrP particles were then plotted against the corresponding pH values to obtain the pH-titration curves [32].…”
