Iron oxide nanoarchitectures with distinct morphologies from 1D to 3D have been developed using various wet chemical methods. They have been employed for a wide range of applications, including energy storage, biomedical, and environmental applications. The functional properties of iron oxide nanoarchitectures depend on the size, shape, composition, magnetic properties, and surface modification. To overcome the limitations of pure iron oxide nanostructures, hybridizations with various inorganic materials (e.g., silica, metals, metal oxides) and carbon‐based materials have been proposed. Herein, the recent advances in the preparation of various iron oxide nanoarchitectures are reviewed along with their functional applications in energy storage, biomedical, and environmental fields. Finally, the effects of various parameters on the functional performance of iron oxide nanostructures for these applications are summarized and the trends and future outlook on the development of iron oxide nanoarchitectures for these applications are also given.

Low temperature active and stable mesoporous Au (0.1, 0.2, 0.5, and 1.0 wt.%) supported -Fe 2 O 3 catalysts were prepared via deposition-precipitation method. The H 2 -pretreated catalyst with 0.5 wt.% Au loading offered CO conversion of 100% at 323 K and showed continual activity for at least 120 h. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analysis indicate that Au species were highly dispersed as nanoparticles (20-40 nm) on the surface of -Fe 2 O 3 support even after thermal treatment at 773 K. The N 2 -physisorption measurements show that the synthesized -Fe 2 O 3 support and Au-Fe 2 O 3 nanocomposites possessed mesopores with high specific surface area of about 158 m 2 g −1 . X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and H 2 -TPR results reveal that the Au species exist in metallic and partially oxidized state due to strong interaction with the support. Effective Au-Fe 2 O 3 interaction resulted in a high activity for Au nanoparticles, locally generated by the thermal treatment at 773 K in air.

This work analyzes the degradation of toxic perchlorate from wastewater and its conversion to nontoxic chloride ion through nano-scale zero valent iron (nZVI) coating. To prevent its agglomeration and to provide the required stabilization and more removal efficiency, it was coated with various coating agents which are co-friendly (green agents) and inexpensive. At first, nZVI was synthesized using green method. Thereafter, it was used for the removal of perchlorate. NZVI was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. Data show that nZVI coated with starch had the size range of 20 to 60 nm and spherical morphology and thickness of about 60 nm. Analysis results of UV-Spectrophotometry and ion chromatography showed that perchlorate was removed with more efficiency (up over 90%) under optimal conditions, and for one week, it was coated with nZVI using starch. Also, the parameters of the removal efficiency include temperature, time reaction, pH and amount of nZVI. Activation energy (E a ) of 16.77 kJ mol -1 and constant rate (k) of 0.0242 min -1 were obtained from the removal of perchlorate under optimal conditions. The study shows that the obtained results improved more than previously.
