Synthesis and Crystal Growth of Tetragonal β‐Fe1.00Se

Abstract: Abstract. Single crystals of tetragonal β-Fe1.00Se were grown from polycrystalline material by chemical vapor transport reaction at temperatures below 723 K using AlCl3 as transport additive. The plate-shaped single crystals have edge lengths up to 4 mm. The single crystals display complete diamagnetic shielding factor 4πχ ≈ 1 below the superconducting transition.

“…Clearly, there is a minor superparamagnetic-like ferromagnetic impurity, as can be expected when using iron metal as starting material and relatively low reaction temperatures. To quantify the impurity, the magnetization curve was extrapolated to zero field, and the obtained magnetization could then be compared with the saturation moments of either Fe metal (2.2 μ B per Fe) as done by Koz et al [10] or Fe 3 O 4 (4 μ B per formula unit). The extrapolated value is approximately 0.0025 μ B , which corresponds to 0.1 % Fe or 0.06 % Fe 3 O 4 , which is below the detection limit of the other analysis techniques, thereby emphasizing the sensitivity of the squid magnetometer.…”

“…By extrapolating back from the higher to zero magnetic fields, it is possible to extract the extrinsic ferromagnetic moment, as demonstrated by Koz et al. for an iron impurity in FeSe 21. Here, cobalt metal was used in the synthesis and can, thus, occur in the end product.…”

“…The high temperature structure of FeSe belongs to the tetragonal P4/nmm space group with the corresponding lattice parameters a = 3.77Å and c = 5.52Å [50][51][52]. Note that here a is the distance between nearest neighbor selenium atoms lying in the same plane.…”
