Synthesis and Crystal Structures of Cd(OH)Cl and Cu(OH)Cl and Relationship to Brucite Type

Abstract: Synthesis of single crystals of Cd(OH)Cl and Cu(OH)Cl allowed us to revise the structure of these hydroxychlorides and con5rm their space group: P6 3 mc (R ‫؍‬ 0.041; R w ‫؍‬ 0.050) for Cd(OH)Cl and P2 1 /c (R ‫؍‬ 0.051; R w ‫؍‬ 0.069) for Cu(OH)Cl. Positions of hydrogen atoms were determined and an hypothesis of hydrogen bonds is discussed in relation to the infrared spectra.A comparison of the structures shows that an isomorphism is not possible between the two compounds, due to the important Jahn+Teller e4e… Show more

“…Notably, the structural relationship between the Cd(OH)Cl and Cu(OH)Cl to brucite has been noted recently. [20] It is likely that many such hybrid metal-organic structures with open-architectures can be made by employing other different organic linkers. In this context, we should draw attention to a new three-dimensional, open-framework, neutral and anhydrous chlorocadmium compound [CdCl 2 (C 4 H 8 N 2 )] (II), [21] synthesized using solvothermal route by us, wherein the amine performs the role of linking the one-dimensional chlorocadmium chains into three-dimensions ( Figure 4).…”

“…In addition, Cd reference compounds of oxide, hydroxide, nitrate and carbonate phase, and hydroxychloride (Cd(OH)Cl) and Cd sorption samples on goethite and Fe(OH) 3 (similar to the preparing procedures for red mud) were also prepared for XANES fingerprint analysis. Cd(OH) 2 and CdCO 3 were prepared following the methods of Gräfe et al (2007), and Cd(OH)Cl was synthesized according to Cudennec et al (2000). Three or more scans were averaged for each sample and reference compound.…”

“…In addition, ab initio XANES calculations using FEFF 8 for Cd(OH)Cl were also performed to simulate the spectrum (Waychunas et al, 2003;Ravel and Newville, 2005). The crystal structure data were obtained from Cudennec et al (2000).…”

“…It is built up from the neutral layer of [Cd(OH) 3/3 Cl 3/3 ]-octahedra and apt to growth along c-axis. 25,26 The solubility of CdClOH is larger than those of cadmium chalcogenides, so it can be easily transformed to cadmium sulfide when sulfur resources exist in solution. Therefore, CdClOH is a good cadmium precursor compound, which can be converted into functional semiconductor materials (e.g., CdO, CdS, CdSe) by reaction with appropriate compounds.…”
