Synthesis and Curing Behaviors of Cross-Linkable Polynaphthols from Renewable Resources:  Preparation of Artificial Urushi

Abstract: This paper describes the synthesis and curing of cross-linkable polynaphthols from renewable resources. Naphthol monomers bearing an unsaturated group from renewable triglyceride oils were designed and oxidatively polymerized to produce new cross-linkable precursor polymers. The monomers were prepared by acylation of hydroxynaphthoic acids with unsaturated alcohols, obtained by reduction of natural oils. The oxidative polymerization was carried out by Fe-salen catalyst to give soluble polynaphthols. NMR analys… Show more

“…Since the adoption of the Kyoto protocol, global efforts have been made to modify energy consumption practices in accordance with more stringent environmental guidelines, to limit production of greenhouse gases, and reduce consumption of petroleum products. Among the many studies that have been conducted to address these issues are studies on the use of renewable natural resources and synthetic adhesive binders as replacements for asphalt binders [4][5][6][7] . Another method that has gained popularity within the asphalt industries is the use of warm-mix asphalt (WMA).…”

“…[4,5] In addition, the double bond functionalities have been utilized for post-modification reactions of the resulting materials, such as cross-linking and thiolene reactions. [6,7] Recently, Turunc and Meier [8] described the synthesis, characterization, and polymerization of monomers derived from methyl 10-undecenoate via a thiol-ene (''click'') approach. In a similar approach, Cádiz and coworkers [9] reported the synthesis of diverse monomers starting from 10-undecenoate and oleate derivatives for the preparation of polyurethanes.…”

“…[1,2] Vegetable oils are complex multi-component mixtures of different triacylglycerols, that is, esters of glycerol and fatty acids. [3] Vegetable oils containing unsaturated fatty acids can be valuable in chemical industry because they can be used in polymerizations to make biobased polymers.…”
