Synthesis and Electrophoretic Properties of Novel Nanoparticles for Colored Electronic Ink and e-Paper Applications

Abstract: A new approach based on non-pigmented, stable colored nanoparticles able to migrate upon application of an electrical field (10-60 V) has been developed for the improvement of the color brightness of e-displays. The scientific challenges comprised the development of efficient syntheses of tri- and bifunctional dendrimers including branching points for further extension and individual decoration with dye (yellow, magenta, cyan). The covalent attachment of these scaffolds to silica nanoparticles was performed vi… Show more

“…In fact, e-books readers are in grey scale or in colour due to the use of colour-filter with white/black EPD [23], [24]. A large claim that has trained recent developments is now for the synthesis of coloured electrophoretic inks [25]- [27]. The drawbacks of inorganic pigments are their high density which induced rapid sedimentation in non-polar media.…”

“…Some applications, like the electrophoretic ink displays (EPDs), used these kinds of colors because the image is observed thanks to the reflection of light. The current challenge is to create colored and highly charged inks in nonpolar media. In fact, e-book readers are in gray scale or in color because of the use of a color filter with white/black EPDs. , A large claim that has trained recent developments is now for the synthesis of colored electrophoretic inks. The drawbacks of inorganic pigments are their high density, which induced rapid sedimentation in nonpolar media. Also, one additional advantage of phosphate compounds is their relatively low density issued from the light and covalent [PO 4 ] skeleton.…”

“…As a paper-like display technology, EPDs have the advantages of paper-like display effect, ultra-low power consumption, and being readable under bright light [2,3]. In recent years, EPDs have been widely used in e-books, electronic labels, and smart watches, amongst others [4,5]. The grayscale display of an EPD depends on the distribution of black and white particles in a microcapsule, which can be driven by voltage timing applied on the pixel, and the voltage timing is called the driving waveform.…”
