Synthesis and Evaluation of New 2‐Mercaptomethyl Benzimidazole Scaffolds as Potential Antibacterial, Antioxidant and Cytotoxic Agents

Abstract: Novel series of benzimidazole derivatives are developed based on the key compound 2‐mercaptomethyl benzimidazole 1. The reactivity of the precursor compound 1 towards nucleophilic reagents enabled us to produce new series with expected bioactivity. The synthesized benzimidazole scaffolds are structurally authenticated and fully characterized by their spectral properties. They exhibit antimicrobial efficiency against selected pathogenic bacteria strains (Gram +ve & ‐ve bacteria) using disc diffusion method, the… Show more

“…Heterocyclic compounds play an important role in biochemistry, medicinal chemistry, organic chemistry and agrochemical industries. In recent years, attention has been given to the benzimidazole class of compounds due to their diverse biological activities, such as anticancer [1,2], antifungal [3], antioxidant [4], cytotoxic [5], antiprotozoal [6], anti-T. cruzi (Trypanosoma cruzi) [7], antiproliferative [8], antihistaminic [9], anti-inflammatory [10], analgesics [11], antibacterial [12], anticonvulsant [13] and acetylcholinesterase [14]. In addition, benzimidazole has been used as corrosion inhibition for mild steel [15], catalytic activity [16], fluorescence chemosensors [17] and chiroptical sensors [18].…”

“…Benzimidazoles are the corner stones as intermediates in many organic reactions (Bai et al , 2001; Hasegawa et al , 1999), important synthons for modeling many biological systems (Erhardt, 1987; Gravatt et al ,1994; Jayabharathi et al , 2013; Khalifa, 2020; Khalifa et al , 2019; Roth et al , 1997) and in supramolecular host-guest systems for Nanomedicine (Praveen and Babu, 2019; Wu et al , 2015). Their characteristic optical linear (Praveen et al , 2015) and second-order non-linear properties (Batista et al , 2007) have been studied and could to be boosted by planting hydroxyl and/or alkoxy substituents (Krawczyk, 2020).…”
