Synthesis and evaluation of properties of poly(p‐phenylenevinylene) based 1,3,4‐oxadiazole systems for optoelectronics and nonlinear optical applications

Abstract: Abstract:-Two new π-conjugated polymers viz; poly(p-phenylenevinylene-1,3,4-oxadiazole), (PPVO) and poly(p-(nitro-phenylene)vinylene-1,3,4-oxadiazole) (PNPVO) were synthesized and characterized. Gilch polymerization technique, using dihaloderivatives of 1,3,4-oxadiazoles, was employed to synthesize them under mild reaction conditions. The macromolecules exhibit good solubility in DMF, formamide, and DMSO, and thus effectively address the insolubility issues

“…However, to optimize and extend their applications, the degree of polarization of the emitted light is still not high enough, and the degrees of orientation (DoOs) of either flexible or rigid polymers need to be improved. Conjugated polymers such as poly(phenylene vinylene) (PPV), polythiophene, polyperinaphthalene, polyfluorene and their derivatives are the most useful luminescent materials, where their main molecular chains are responsible for the luminescence. Owing to their conjugated structure, these main molecular chains are rigid .…”

Owing to their conjugated structure, these main molecular chains are rigid . Therefore, to realize a highly polarized light emission, one of the key issues is to increase the DoO of the rigid polymer chains.…”

“…Despite advances in the synthesis of new polymers and the improvement of their electro‐optical properties, PPV is still one of the most relevant materials for electroluminescent applications . The ability to hold functional groups enabled extension of their applicability to sensors, solar cells, electroluminescent devices and nonlinear optics …”

“…7 The ability to hold functional groups enabled extension of their applicability to sensors, solar cells, electroluminescent devices and nonlinear optics. [8][9][10][11] Although one of the major interests is the development of large area displays, 7 the local control of PPV deposition is attractive for electro-optical microcircuits with considerable impact on novel technologies in integrated devices. However, the low processability of PPV, owing its insolubility, 12 hinders the fabrication of microcircuits with different geometries.…”
