Synthesis and evolution of crystalline garnet phases in Y3Al5-xInxO12

Abstract: Abstract. In the present work the sinterability and microstructal evolution of mixed-metal Y 3 Al 5-x In x O 12 (0 ≤ x ≤ 2) (YAING) garnet powders synthesized by an aqueous sol-gel process were investigated. The synthesized samples were characterized by X-ray powder analysis (XRD). It was demonstrated that the formation of Y 3 Al 5-x In x O 12 garnets proceeds only within narrow substitutional range. Scanning electron microscopy was used to study the morphology and microstructure of the ceramic samples.

“…13,14) This Ce-doped Y 3 (Al X Ga 1−X ) 5 O 12 scintillator showed fast scintillation decay time and high scintillation light yield compared with Ce-doped YAG. 14) On the contrary, Ce-doped Y 3 (Al X In 1−X ) 5 O 12 (Ce:YAING) has previously been reported in a powder form; 15) however as far as we are aware, no studies have reported its optical and scintillation properties. The YAING has a large effective atomic number (Z eff ) so they are suitable to detect X-and γ-rays.…”

“…The stabilities of these phases with the chemical formula of C 3 A 2 Al 3 O 12 depend on the ionic size of an element at the dodecahedral and the octahedral sites. From the earlier results, it is known that the lanthanide elements from Gd to Lu substituting for the dodecahedral site, and Sc 3+ (3A group), Fe 3+ (8A group), Al 3+ , Ga 3+ , In 3+ (3B group) substituting for octahedral site were stable 19–21 . While, antimony (Sb) ion‐substituted aluminum garnet have never been reported.…”
