“…In contrast, the complexes with aspect ratios higher than ca. 2.3, that is, those bearing fairly anisotropic Lewis bases [namely, 5,5′‐didecyl‐2,2′‐bipyridine (Bpy 10‐10 ), 5,5′‐didodecyl‐2,2′‐bipyridine (Bpy 12‐12 ), and 5‐heptadecyl‐5′‐methyl‐2,2′‐bipyridine (Bpy 17‐1 )], are liquid‐crystalline (LC; Table , Entries 10–12), in agreement with the behavior reported previously for related lanthanidomesogens with similar or higher aspect ratios (Table , Entries 13–16) . In our case, Eu(CPDk 3‐Ph ) 3 Bpy 17‐1 melts upon heating into a smectic A (SmA) phase and on further heating into a nematic (N) phase, as can be recognized readily from the typical optical textures (Figure ).…”
