Synthesis and Optical Properties of Fullerene-Functionalized Polycarbonates

Abstract: Fullerenation of polycarbonate (PC) is achieved by direct reaction of C60 with PC using AlCl3 as catalyst. Stirring a 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane solution of C60 and PC in the presence of AlCl3 under nitrogen at 140 °C for 24 h attached C60 to the PC chains, yielding fullerenated PCs (C60-PCs) with a C60 content up to 2.16 wt %. The C60-PCs are soluble in tetrahydrofuran (THF) and chloroform, and IR, UV, and NMR analyses suggest that they possess the molecular structure HxC60(PC)x with x < 1 on the average. The … Show more

“…Technol., 10, 357±420 (1999) tion was given for this particular C 60 -containing polymer owing to its highly crosslinked structure. Using the same catalyst, soluble C 60 -grafted polycarbonates have recently been synthesized, which were demonstrated to limit strong optical pulses at 532 nm more effectively than pure C 60 (see section on`C 60 -Containing Polymers for Photovoltaic and Optical-Limiting Applications') and have novel bathochromic light transmission characteristics [696]. Soluble C 60 grafted polymers have also been prepared through the amine addition [681± 683, 697] of aminopolymers to fullerene double bonds (Scheme 19) [698].…”

“…We have developed simple polymer reactions with general applicability for directly attaching C 60 to preformed polymers [15,16]. Polyacetylene is a prototypical conjugated polymer, and substituted polyacetylenes have been found to possess interesting material properties such as optical activity and liquid crystallinity [17±20].…”

“…The light transmission spectrum of 19 resembles that of an optical cutoff filter, which redshifts with an increase in its concentration (c) (Figure 1.11b). Its cutoff wavelength (λ c ) changes semilogarithmically with c over a wide spectral range [60], which is possibly due to nanocluster formation. This offers an easy way to make a plastic optical filter, whose λ c can be readily tuned by varying its PA content.…”
