Synthesis and photocatalytic performance of yttrium-doped CeO2 with a hollow sphere structure

Abstract: We report a facile and novel approach to prepare yttrium-doped CeO 2 with a hollow sphere hierarchical structure by a simple hydrothermal method with cerium nitrate hexahydrate and yttrium nitrate hexahydrate as original materials and polystyrene microsphere as a soft-template. Through systematic experiments, the effects of experimental parameters such as doping and morphology on photocatalytic characteristics of the ceria were examined in detail. The

“…Photoluminescence is a property that has commonly been used to characterise rare earth-substituted ceria materials [111,114,117,144,[155][156][157][158][159][160], while Eu-substituted materials are of particular interest for their luminescent properties. Eu-CeO 2 materials prepared by solvothermal routes have provided some useful materials: this includes in applications such as solar cells, Figure 19 [116], and detection of fingerprints [141].…”

“…In a similar manner, Er-CeO 2 was loaded onto graphene oxide directly via in situ hydrothermal crystallisation, and then in a second hydrothermal step, CuO was co-loaded; these composite materials showed enhanced photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 to methanol compared to the individual components [163]. Xu et al used polystyrene microspheres as templates to produce hollow microspheres constructed from agglomerated crystallites of Y-substituted CeO 2 : these showed enhanced activity for the photocatalytic decomposition of acetaldehyde [158].…”

“…An F 2g mode confirms the fluorite cubic structure of the prepared samples and also signifies the symmetrical stretching vibration of the CeO 8 vibrational unit. A broad and asymmetric mode at * 460 cm -1 is red shifted as compared to bulk form owing to oxygen defects, phonon confinement, size distribution, deviation in phonon relaxation and strain present in the sample (Xu et al 2017;Lopez et al 2015). The other modes at * 546 and 612 cm -1 are due to oxygen vacancies (intrinsic and extrinsic).…”

“…Unfortunately, CeO 2 with indirect band gap energy (3.2 eV) is strictly limited in the photocatalytic system of the UV-light region. Hence, nonmetal or metal ions such as S, N, P, Er, Fe, Sm, and Y have been doped in CeO 2 to extend light harvesting to the visible-light region, leading to enhanced photocatalytic activity [34,35,36,37,38,39,40]. Apart from a doping strategy, noble metals such as Au and Ag loaded on CeO 2 have been confirmed to present much better photocatalytic activity [41].…”
