Block copolymers are the focus of a great deal of research activity in contemporary macromolecular science. This is attributable to a range of fascinating fundamental issues associated with understanding self‐assembly processes in both solution and in bulk, coupled to an adventitious convergence of substantial progress in synthetic versatility, developments in molecular and structural characterization, understanding of the factors that control phase behavior, and elucidation of the response of copolymer materials to external fields. It is argued that due to the rapid progress in these areas block copolymers now stand on the verge of a new generation of sophisticated materials applications, in which particular nanostructures will play a crucial role. This may be contrasted with the current billion dollar annual market for block copolymer materials, in which no substantial advantage is taken of any particular nanostructure. A variety of persistent challenges are identified that stand between block copolymers and widespread success in novel applications; foremost amongst these are issues concerned with processing.

The photophysical properties of homopolymers (2) and block copolymers (3) prepared by ring-opening metathesis polymerization of norbornenes substituted with benzophenone, naphthalene, and phenanthrene groups (1) have been investigated. When benzophenone is attached to this polynorbornene backbone, its excited state behavior differs from that observed for monomeric benzophenone. A new intramolecular excited state complex can be observed in the transient absorption and emission measurements of the benzophenone-substituted homopolymer. In copolymers bearing benzophenone and naphthalene or phenanthrene substituent blocks, triplet energy transfer from the sensitizer (benzophenone) to the arene is observed. This energy transfer dominates over the intramolecular complexation that characterizes group interactions in the homopolymer.

Two photozymes poly(vinylnaphthalene/sodium styrenesulfonate) (PZ1) and poly(vinylnaphthalene/sodium styrenesulfonate/N,N'-dimethyl methacryloyloxyethyl propanesulfonate) (PZ2) were synthesized and used for the modification of hydrogels. The hydrogels were composed of acrylamide and 2-acrylamido-2- methylpropanesulfonic acid monomers, and modified with sodium bentonite (NB). The fluorescence properties and photoactivity of the photozymes were examined. Both photozymes demonstrated high self-assembly in both aqueous solutions and hydrogel matrices, which is of great importance for the antenna effect. For the NB-reinforced hydrogel, strong energy transfer from the excited chromophores to the NB was observed and assigned to the high surface conductivity of clay. PZ2 exhibited higher photocatalytic activity for the methylene blue (MB) photodegradation than PZ1. This is most likely due to the better self-assembly and thus enhanced antenna effect of the zwitterionic PZ2. MB a bsorbed by the hydrogel from aqueous solution was efficiently decomposed in a photozyme-catalyzed photochemical process
