Synthesis and properties of a novel UV-curable waterborne hyperbranched polyurethane

Abstract: A series of ultraviolet (UV)-curable waterborne hyperbranched polyurethane dispersions (WHPUDs) have been successfully synthesized by modifying the hyperbranched polyester H10, which was prepared using pentaerythritol as a core molecule and dimethylolpropionic acid as monomers, with succinic anhydride, toluene diisocyanate (TDI), and hydroxypropyl acrylate (HPA). The H10 was characterized by 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrom… Show more

“…It is obvious that the average particle size initially increases and subsequently decreases as PA content increases. Although the average particle size could be controlled by emulsification condition such as stirring speed and dispersion temperature, it is mainly governed by the concentration of hydrophilic groups and segmented polymeric structure . In this work, the effect of different mass ratio (PA/PU) on particle size was investigated.…”

The particle sizes of PUA-0, PUA-5, PUA-20, PUA-30, and PA are 70, 85, 115, 77, and 59 nm, respectively.…”

“…The most important feature of waterborne coatings is that they do not contain volatile organic compounds [3] and air pollutants, so they are widely used in various fields, such as woodwork processing, in interior decoration materials, housing construction, automobile manufacturing, in aircraft carriers, etc. [4,5], and have broad market application prospects. However, due to the low hardness, non-wear resistance and insufficient toughness of the waterborne coating, accidental damage and cracks often occur during its service life, which limits its practical application [6][7][8].…”

“…Most reported literatures were focused on synthesis and characterization of novel BPUs with highly branched polyols . However, the highly reactive NCO group was not designed as terminal group to further improve the adhesive strength between polyurethanes and substrates.…”
