Synthesis and properties of heterografted toothbrush-like copolymers with alternating PEG and PCL grafts and tunable RAFT-generated segments

Abstract: Novel (A-g-D)(B-alt-C)mD-type heterografted toothbrush-like copolymers with great potential in smart drug delivery systems and thermo-responsive surface materials are investigated.

“…The composition of monomer feed also plays an important role, when the proportion of maleic anhydride was large, the copolymerization rate was faster while the control over the molecular weight and molecular weight distribution was poor [65]. In addition to enhance the alternating behavior of the copolymerization, CRP also provides pathways to synthesize hybrid composites [66], nanostructures [57,67,68], and different architectures, such as polymer brushes [69,70], di-blocks [71], stars and Miktoarm stars [72], and hyperbranch structures [73].…”

“…Corresponding reaction converts a tertiary amine into a quaternary salt in the presence of an alkyl halide, and polar solvents accelerate the alkylation of amine structure. Ionic liquids, polymeric nanoparticles, and functional polymers can be easily produced by alkylation of amine species …”

“…So far Menschutkin chemistry has been applied to obtain various functional organic compounds using tertiary amines and alkyl halides . The corresponding chemical reaction converts tertiary amines to quaternary salts and the resultant compound may become hydrophilic depending on the chemical structures of the reactants.…”
