Synthesis and Properties of Mesogen-Jacketed Liquid Crystalline Polymers with Asymmetry Mesogenic Core

Abstract: Smectic A (S A ) liquid crystalline phase developed from a new kind of mesogen-jacketed liquid crystalline polymer (MJLCP) whose mesogenic side groups are asymmetrically bonded to the main-chain was first reported. Two series of MJLCPs, poly[4,4′-bis(4-butoxyphenyloxycarbonyl)-2-vinylbiphenyl] (PBP2VBP) and poly[4,4′-bis(4-butoxyphenyloxycarbonyl)-3-vinylbiphenyl] (PBP3VBP) with different molecular weights were designed and synthesized Via atom transfer radical polymerization successfully. The chemical structu… Show more

“…2 Recently, a smectic A phase was identified for the first time in the MJLCP family. 3 MJLCPs can be synthesized by controlled radical polymerization and thus introduced into rod-coil block copolymers to serve as ''rods' '. 4 Rod-coil block copolymers have been a hot topic due to their typical self-assembly behavior of forming various supramolecular structures.…”

“…Both of the monomers are packed so well that several sharp peaks appear at middle angles. Similar to their monomers, polymer PHATP(OC6)2 and PPATP(OC6)2 show a reflections in low‐angle region, d ‐spacing (31.32 and 29.41 Å, respectively) is almost identical to the calculated length of the mesogenic units in monomers (27.20 Å), which means the side chain of the mesogenic units is perpendicular to the main chain 41. The schematic drawing of the layer structure of the PHATP(OC6)2 is shown in Figure 7.…”
