Synthesis and properties of new aromatic poly‐(ether benzoxazole)s from 2,2′‐bis(4‐amino‐3‐hydroxyphenoxy)biphenyl and aromatic dicarboxylic acid chlorides

Abstract: A new bis(o‐aminophenol) with a crank and twisted noncoplanar structure and ether linkages, 2,2′‐bis(4‐amino‐3‐hydroxyphenoxy)biphenyl, was synthesized by the reaction of 2‐benzyloxy‐4‐fluoronitrobenzene with biphenyl‐2,2′‐diol, followed by reduction. Biphenyl‐2,2′‐diyl‐containing aromatic poly(ether benzoxazole)s with inherent viscosities of 0.52–1.01 dL/g were obtained by a conventional two‐step procedure involving the polycondensation of the bis(o‐aminophenol) monomer with various aromatic dicarboxylic acid… Show more

“…benzoxazole)s. [5,6] Most of these polymerizations have been performed using a two step method involving the heat treatment of a poly(o-hydroxyamide) precursor for cyclization to form a benzoxazole structure. This heat treatment process usually leads to possible crosslinking during the rearrangement of the chemical structure.…”

“…However, the conventional PBOs are completely insoluble in organic solvents, seriously hampering their practical applications. Hence, researchers have made many attempts in recent years to modify PBO's backbone structures to improve their solution processability 9–20. In addition, photoimageable PBOs have been considered as promising polymer materials in microelectronic packaging industry because of their lower dielectric constants and high optical transparency 21–27.…”

“…However, similar to polyimides, most PBOs have high thermal transitions and are generally only soluble in strong acids, and so their applicability may be narrow. To overcome such difficulties, researchers have made many attempts to modify the backbone structure and improve their processability 5–15. One successful approach is to introduce flexible linkages into the PBO backbone to increase processability.…”

“…In some cases, the 6F groups are combined with other flexible linkages such as aryl ether to lower the glass‐transition temperature ( T g ) 8, 9. Similarly, some other poly(ether benzoxazole)s have been generated, and they display properties intermediate between those of the two homopolymers 10–14. Desired properties resulting from these materials include thermoplasticity, excellent tensile properties, and enhanced toughness.…”
