Synthesis and properties of polystyrene-based polyHIPEs reinforced with quadruple hydrogen bond functionality

Abstract: Polystyrene-based polyHIPEs were synthesized by RAFT polymerization and strengthened by introducing UPy groups (2-Ureido-4[1H] pyrimidinone) into polyHIPEs. Incorporation of UPy groups into polyHIPEs has created pores and controlled the porous morphology of resulting material. Meanwhile, the incorporation of quadruple hydrogen bond introduced some pins into polyHIPE. In comparison to the polyHIPE without reinforcement through quadruple hydrogen bond, the porosity of the reinforced sample was as high as 92 % an… Show more

“…The possible reason might be that some smaller voids and windows were filled with grafted triazole groups and even vanished, resulting in the increase in average voids and windows size. Similar change in pore size was also observed in our previous study of ionic liquid supported porous silica particles and some other reports …”

“…The Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) specific surface area and pore size ( D p ) were determined from N 2 adsorption isotherms (Figure S3). The specific surface area ranged from 5–23 m 2 /g and increased with increasing internal phase volume ratio, porogen content, and cross-linking degree, which was consistent with the results reported in literature . The pore size ranged from 22–41 nm and therefore located at the mesoporous region, which might be ascribed to the presence of porogen .…”
