Synthesis and properties of water‐soluble sulfonated acetone–formaldehyde resin

Abstract: Water-soluble sulfonated acetone-formaldehyde (SAF) resins were synthesized by the reaction among acetone, formaldehyde, and sodium bisulfite. The factors affecting the properties of SAF resins and optimum conditions of preparation were investigated. The SAF resins prepared under proper conditions have good water solubility and high performance as a superplasticizer used in concrete.

“…Some dispersants have been commercialized, such as naphthalene sulfonated formaldehyde condensates, sulfonated melamine formaldehyde polymers and the aminosulfonic acid series, etc. They are in the process of synthesis or use may result in undesirable environmental effects, as they can accidentally or intentionally release formaldehyde into the environment [ 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 ]. Therefore, an environmentally friendly and biodegradable additive is urged to be developed as a new high-performance dispersant for coal–water slurries using cheap and abundant natural renewable resources as raw materials.…”

“…It was developed earlier than the 1990s and then got extensive research and application due to its good water solubility and superior dispersing performance. 15,16 Fortunately, we observed an interesting property of SAF that it shows obvious photoluminescence (PL) phenomenon. It is well known that SAF is a polymer containing non-conjugated long linear aliphatic chain with carbonyl and ether bonds.…”

“…Due to higher cost of the synthetic superplasticizer, the usage of it is still not common. Recently less expensive aliphatic ketone based sulfonate acetone formaldehyde condensate (SAF) has been synthesized as a new type of water reducer (Ming et al, 2013;Lei et al, 2012;Pei et al 2004;Zhi et al, 2003).…”
