Synthesis and property of EPEG‐based polycarboxylate ether superplasticizers via RAFT polymerization

Abstract: Polycarboxylate ether superplasticizers (PCEs) with comb-shaped molecular structures have attracted considerable attention in the area of admixtures for construction engineering. However, there are some contradictions in studying the relationship between the molecular structure and property of PCE due to

“…The reasons for the decrease in electrical conductivity of building material slurry are as follows [ 13 ]: Due to the decrease in liquid phase conductivity of ASBM with the increase of water-reducing agent addition, polycarboxylate copolymers contain , which can form complexes with Ca 2+ in the liquid phase, resulting in a decrease in ion concentration in the liquid phase. ASBM particles adsorb water-reducing agents and participate in particle hydration, entering their hydration products.…”

“…This is mainly because the non-neutralized acrylic acid and EPEG react rapidly under the initiation of the initiator, and the heat release is concentrated, which accelerates the process of the polymerization reaction, resulting in an increase in molecular weight and a decrease in the initial dispersion performance and dispersion retention performance of the water reducer. When the acrylic acid is partially pre-neutralized, the reaction rate is reduced, the heat release is stable, and the performance of the water-reducing agent is improved [12]. However, when the excessive acrylic acid is neutralized, the polymerization activity is reduced, which affects the normal polymerization of the reaction system, reduces the conversion rate of the system, and then affects the overall performance of the water-reducing agent.…”

“…Zhu et al 32 used APEG 600 ( n = 14), APEG 1200 ( m = 23) and methacrylic acid (MAA) as monomers, S‐S′‐bis‐a, a’‐dimethyl a”‐acetate‐trithiocarbonate (BDATT) as RAFT reagent and AIBA as initiator, and adjusted the pH at the end of the reaction to obtain the final product. While Chen et al, 33 on the other hand, polymerization was carried out under the protection of nitrogen using ethylenedioxyethylene ether monovinyl polyoxyethylene ether (EPEG) and AA as the monomers, DCPSA as the RAFT reagent, and n‐propanol as the solvent, followed by dialysis of the crude product to obtain the final product.…”
