Nanofluids are regarded as promising heat transfer fluid due to their ultrafast cooling capability. However, stability analysis of nanofluids is very critical before its application in heat transfer .The present paper reports about an investigation on the stability of water-based Al2O3 and TiO2 nanofluids at ambient temperature. Nanoparticles, namely Al2O3 and TiO2 at different concentrations of 1, 0.5, 0.1, 0.05, and 0.01 wt.% respectively were directly dispersed in water without adding any dispersant and placed in a static container to observe gravitation settling. Change of sedimentation height with respect to time was measured using the sedimentation photograph capturing method. DLS (Dynamic Light Scattering) and zeta potential analysis were also executed to examine the stability of nanofluids. The results show that the visualization method, DLS and zeta potential analysis are in good correspondence to each other. Sedimentation velocity increases with an increase in nanoparticle concentration and aging. Brownian motion of nanoparticles resist the sedimentation in nanofluids. It is observed that TiO2nanofluid is more stable as compared to Al2O3 nanofluid due to its smaller particle size. Finally authors recommend smaller particle size, optimized sonication time, low nanoparticle concentration and use of surfactant to obtain better dispersion stability of nanofluids

It has long been established that a suspension of nanosized solid particles in liquids provide useful advantages in industrial heat transfer fluid systems. Numerous investigations on nanofluids show a significant enhancement in thermal conductivity over the base fluid in which these nanoparticles are dispersed. However, the stability of the suspension is critical in the development and application of these new kind of heat transfer fluids. Rather, high discrepancy in the published data for the same nanoparticles on the physical and thermal characteristics of nanofluids is primarily due to different methods adopted by different researchers to obtain stable nanofluids. Sedimentation and agglomeration of nanoparticles in nanofluids and their dispersion stability has not been well addressed in the literature. Hence, there is a need to establish a standard method of preparation of these nanofluids so as to obtain a unified data which can eventually be utilized for the application of nanofluids. This chapter focuses on the stability of nanofluids prepared via two step process. Different parameters that affect the stability of nanofluids have been discussed. Different techniques that have been used for the evaluation of the stability characteristics of nanofluids have been elucidated.

Synthesis of spherical ZnO nanoparticles by room temperature chemical precipitation method was scaled up from a batch volume of 200 mL to batch volume of 500 mL, 1 L, 2 L and 5 L. Electron microscopy results reveal spherical morphology of the particles with sizes in the range of 20-40 nm at all batch volumes (scales). X-ray diffraction studies showed that the ZnO nanopowders synthesized at all batch volumes had hexagonal Wurtzite structure with a similar crystallite size. The yield of ZnO nanoparticles increased linearly with batch volume. The scale up results in increased yield at lower time consumption.
