Synthesis and structural studies of Na2O-ZnO-ZnF2-B2O3 oxyfluoride glasses

Abstract: This paper describes the synthesis and spectroscopic studies of the glass system, 20Na 2 O-(20-x) ZnO-xZnF 2 -60B 2 O 3 (x = 0, 5, 10, 15, 20), prepared by melt quenching method. The analyses of DSC and XRD did not show the crystallinity of the glass sample. 11 B MAS-NMR shows the presence of sharp peak around -14 ppm. From the IR studies, the broadening of the peak around 1200-1400 and 800-1100 cm -1 shows the presence of mixed linkages like B-O-B, B-O-Zn in the network.

“…FTIR spectroscopy was used to obtain essential information concerning the arrangement of the structural units of these glasses. It is widely accepted that vibrational spectra of vitreous B 2 O 3 exhibit an intense band in the region 1600-1200 cm − 1 attributed to B-O symmetric stretching vibrations of BO 3 units, whereas the band in the region 1200-800 cm − 1 due to B-O band stretching of BO 4 tetrahedral units and third band around 700 cm − 1 assigned to B-O-B bend vibrations of borate network [1][2][3][4][5]. There is no significant variation with different concentrations of the Cu 2+ ions in the host.…”

“…Borate glasses possess scientific interest because of the occurrence of boron anomaly, and is incorporated into various glass systems as a flux material to attain materials of high technological application [1][2][3][4][5][6]. These compounds present an effective atomic number, which is very close to that of human tissue (Z eff = 7.42) [7].…”

“…Therefore, the structural investigation of boron in these glasses is one of the most attractive factors. In the borate glasses, B 3+ ions are triangularly coordinate by oxygen atoms and triangle units are corner bonded in a random configuration [4].…”
