Pentafulvenes are a unique class of compounds that originally attracted attention due to their propensity to display nonbenzenoid aromaticity. Subsequently, they were recognized as valuable synthons for the construction of a wide range of compounds by virtue of their ability to display multiple cycloaddition profiles. Naturally, this area of organic chemistry has experienced rapid growth over the last five decades, fueled by elegant work showcasing the unique reactivity of pentafulvenes in a plethora of cycloaddition reactions. In this Review, we have attempted to provide a systematic account of the methods for the generation of pentafulvenes, their rich and varied cycloaddition chemistry, organometallic reactions, and theoretical studies that support their versatility. Further, we have highlighted their applications in the synthesis of a variety of complex structural frameworks. It is our conviction that this Review will be useful to a wide range of chemists, and will spur further research in this promising area.

The title compounds, 6-cyclopropyl-1,3-diphenylfulvene, C21H18, [systematic name: 5-(cyclopropylmethylidene)-1,3-diphenylcyclopenta-1,3-diene], 1, and 6-(2,3-dimethoxynaphthyl)-1,3-diphenylfulvene, C30H24O2, {systematic name: 5-[(3,4-dimethoxynaphthalen-2-yl)methylidene]-1,3-diphenylcyclopenta-1,3-diene}, 2, were prepared from 1,3-diphenylcyclopentadiene, pyrrolidine, and the corresponding aldehydes in an ethanolic solution. Each structure crystallizes with one molecule per asymmetric unit and exhibits the alternating short and long bond lengths typical of fulvenes. A network of C—H...C ring interactions as well as C—H...O interactions is observed, resulting in the compact packing found in each structure.

The methyl C-H bonds in the dimethylfulvene complex [ 5 , 1-C 5 H 4 C(CH 3) 2 ]-[Ru(CO) 2 ][Ru(CO) 4 ] are known experimentally to be activated by the central Ru 2 unit to give the dehydrogenation product [ 5 , 3-C 5 H 4 C(CH 2) 2 ][Ru(CO) 2 ][Ru(CO) 3 ]. The mechanistic aspects of this process are explored by a theoretical investigation of the two series of complexes [C 5 H 4 C(CH 3) 2 ]Ru 2 (CO) n and [C 5 H 4 C(CH 2) 2 ]Ru 2 (CO) n (n = 6, 5, 4). Potential reaction intermediates with agostic hydrogen atoms as well as ruthenium carbonyl hydrides and dihydrogen complexes are found.
