Synthesis and studies of photocatalytic activity of composite based on nanodispersed TiO2 and SiO2

Abstract: A composition photocatalyst SiO 2 /TiO 2 based on nanodispersed titanium dioxide has been synthesized and its photocatalytic activity by oxidation of azo dye chrome brown has been studied. It is shown that the degree of decoloration of the chrome brown solution increases by 25%, when the content of the catalyst in the solution increases.

“…The sol-gel method is used for nanoparticles with high surface area and provides effective control over the texture and surface properties of nanoparticles. There are five main steps of this method starting with hydrolysis and then polycondensation, ageing, drying, and thermal decomposition [32,40,43]. According to [44,45], hydrothermal synthesis refers to the "heterogeneous reactions for synthesizing inorganic materials in aqueous media above ambient temperature and pressure" and the advantage of this method is the low energy consumption, the low-temperature processes, and the environ-mental impact.…”

“…So, it must be effectively treated the wastewater dyes before discharge, otherwise it will cause great harm to the environment and human health. The common treatment techniques include electrochemical oxidation [4], membrane separation [5] and ion exchange [6], photodegradation [7] and adsorption [8]. Adsorption is a promising dye removal method among these various dye wastewater treatment methods owig to its simple operation process, low cost and effective [9][10][11].…”

“…SiO 2 has been incorporated into the TiO 2 matrix to enhance the photocatalytic process [2][3][4] . Al 2 O 3 and SiO 2 have high thermal stability, excellent mechanical strength and help to create new catalytic sites due to interaction between TiO 2 and SiO 2 also, SiO 2 acts as a carrier of TiO 2 and helps to obtain a large surface area as well as a suitable porous structure 5,6 . Due to their good resistance against alkaline solutions, Al 2 O 3 -TiO 2 -SiO 2 coatings are attracting the attention of many scientists.…”
