Synthesis and Study of Chemical, Thermal, Mesomorphic, and Optical Properties of Terphenyls Modified with Nitrile Groups

Abstract: We report the synthesis, characterization, and the thermotropic and photoluminescence properties of dialkoxyterphenyls with (T12-CN and T12-2CN) and without (T12) nitrile groups. These terphenyls were prepared through the Suzuki-Miyaura crosscoupling reaction using a palladium-based catalyst. The products obtained were analyzed as powders or after being drop-casted or spin-coated on glass. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance ( 1 H NMR) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy techniques confirmed the structur… Show more

“…The PHU material was polymerized by cycloaddition reaction in the presence of metal catalyst under highly controlled parameters [11,12,13]. Briefly, a 100 mL beaker with 10 mL of DMF was used as the dissolution medium for hexamethylene diamine, 3.8 mL of cyclic carbonates (1 M), 5 mL of LiCl (1 M) and 1.59 g of 1,6-hexamethylenediamine (HMDA) (4.3 mm) at 95 °C at 260 rpm for one hour.…”

“…7,57 The extensive p conjugation present within these molecules is responsible for their intriguing optical and electronic properties. 58,59 However, intermolecular p-p interaction, which leads to aggregation, severely limits the solubility and photoluminescence of planar polyayrls. 60 The development of sterically congested polyaryls is an efficacious method to improve solubility, ability to transport charge, and, ultimately, photoluminescence.…”

“…Terphenyl compounds occupy an important place among the already known liquid crystals (LCs). [1][2][3][4][5] Due to the presence of a rather extended conjugation system, terphenyl derivatives exhibit unique optical [6][7][8][9][10] and electronic 11,12 properties that enable them to be used in applications such as organic light-emitting diodes and field-effect transistors. Terphenyls are also promising as dyes for lasers.…”
