Seven lithium complexes supported by sterically and electronically diverse phenoxyimine ligands were synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction, NMR spectroscopy and elemental microanalysis. These complexes show high activity (k obs � 7.43 × 10 À 2 s À 1 ) for rac-lactide ring-opening polymerization (ROP) in the presence of co-initiator benzyl alcohol (BnOH), with the exception of Li4 which features an unusual polymeric ladder structure. Overall, the catalyst activity correlates to the aggregation state; the catalysts with low aggregation states display increased propagation rates attributed to improved metal accessibility and kinetic mobility. The nature of the ligand substituents and solvent influence the catalyst aggregation in both the solid-and solution-state. While the lithium complexes can initiate rac-lactide ROP without BnOH, the addition of this co-initiator significantly increases the polymerization rate by switching the mechanism from a coordination-insertion to an activated monomer pathway, changing the resultant poly(lactic acid) architecture from cyclic to linear.

The interaction of the neurotransmitter dopamine is reported with a single particle white light-emitting (WLE) quantum dot complex (QDC). The QDC is composed of yellow emitting ZnO quantum dots (Qdots) and blue emitting Zn(MSA) complex (MSA = N-methylsalicylaldimine) synthesized on their surfaces. Sensing is achieved by the combined changes in the visual luminescence color from white to blue, chromaticity color coordinates from (0.31, 0.33) to (0.24, 0.23) and the ratio of the exponents (α /α ) of on/off probability distribution (from 0.24 to 3.21) in the blinking statistics of WLE QDC. The selectivity of dopamine toward ZnO Qdots, present in WLE QDC, helps detect ≈13 dopamine molecules per Qdot. Additionally, the WLE QDC exhibits high sensitivity, with a limit of detection of 3.3 × 10 m (in the linear range of 1-100 × 10 m) and high selectivity in presence of interfering biological species. Moreover, the single particle on-off bilking statistics based detection strategy may provide an innovative way for ultrasensitive detection of analytes.

Three phenoxyimine Fe(iii)Cl complexes bearing electronically diverse -Cl, -H or -Bu substituents in the ortho position were synthesised. X-ray crystallographic analysis of the complexes reveals mononuclear structures with pentacoordinate iron centres and trigonal bipyramidal geometries. All three complexes demonstrated excellent catalytic activities towards CO/epoxide coupling to selectively form cyclic carbonates, with catalyst activity correlating with the electron withdrawing nature of the ortho-substituent (Cl > H > Bu) and thus the Lewis acidity of the metal centre. The chloro-substituted complex displayed remarkable activity in the synthesis of propylene carbonate from propylene oxide and CO, reaching turnover frequencies (TOF) up to 760 h in the presence of TBABr co-catalyst at 120 °C and 20 bars of CO pressure. Importantly, the catalyst is also very robust, functioning with high substrate loading, under air or in the presence of water. The substrate scope was successfully extended to other terminal epoxides including epichlorohydrin (TOF = 900 h) and to the more challenging internal epoxide, cyclohexene oxide (TOF = 80 h). These are amongst the highest TOF values reported for an iron CO/epoxide coupling catalyst to date.
