Synthesis and swelling behavior of sodium alginate / poly (vinyl alcohol) hydrogels

Abstract: Objectives: Hydrogels are macromolecular networks able to absorb and release water/biological fluids in a reverse phase manner, in response to specific environmental stimuli. Such stimuli -sensitive behavior makes hydrogels interesting for the design of smart devices applicable to a variety of technological fields. They are able to absorb and retain 10-20% and upto 1000 times of water or biological fluids than their dry weight. The aim of this study is to extend the work in drug delivery in stomach at pH 2-2.2… Show more

“…The swelling behavior of PVA-ALG beads was analyzed, considering its contribution to structural and mechanical stability and adsorption properties [54,55]. The swelling of PVA-ALG beads occurs due to their polymer chains absorbing water and the diffusion of water into the pores of the bead matrix [29,31].…”

“…The swelling of PVA-ALG beads occurs due to their polymer chains absorbing water and the diffusion of water into the pores of the bead matrix [29,31]. This property is primarily governed by crosslinking inside the bead's internal structure, which is in uenced by the type of crosslinking solution, polymer concentration, crosslinking time, and crosslinking rate between the polymers and crosslinkers [55]. The beads were immersed in water to assess the changes in both mass and volume, and the increments were followed for the rst twenty-four hours.…”
