A B S T R A C T We tested whether apoprotein B is present in fasting and postprandial human duodenojejunal mucosa because lipoprotein-like particles are visualized by electron microscopy within the smooth endoplasmic reticulum and the Golgi cisternae of these absorptive cells. Duodenojejunal biopsies from normal volunteers were incubated in citrate buffer and were shaken in 1% EDTA so that absorptive cells could be freed from underlying tissue. Apoprotein B was determined by double-antibody radioimmunoassay in homogenates of absorptive cells.The preparations of absorptive cells were shown to be uncontaminated with plasma lipoproteins; they did not contain any albumin by immunodiffusion able to detect 2 Ag/ml. They adsorbed less than 0.1% of 'Ilow density lipoprotein which was added to the citrate buffer. Cell preparations from suction biopsies of human rectum contained no detectable apoprotein B.Duodenojejunal absorptive cells from 22 fasting subjects contained 3.2±0.

The lymphatic system is comprised of a network of vessels interrelated with lymphoid tissue, which has the holistic function to maintain the local physiologic environment for every cell in all tissues of the body. The lymphatic system maintains extracellular fluid homeostasis favorable for optimal tissue function, removing substances that arise due to metabolism or cell death, and optimizing immunity against bacteria, viruses, parasites, and other antigens. This article provides a comprehensive review of important findings over the past century along with recent advances in the understanding of the anatomy and physiology of lymphatic vessels, including tissue/organ specificity, development, mechanisms of lymph formation and transport, lymphangiogenesis, and the roles of lymphatics in disease.

Pancreatectomized dogs developed hypertriglyceridemia. This probably resulted from a lack of insulin rather than a lack of glucagon, as it did not develop either in pancreatectomized dogs maintained on insulin, or in dogs with all but the uncinate process of the pancreas removed. The increase in plasma triglycerides was preceded by a decrease in post-heparin lipolytic activity (PHLA) and an increase in FFA. As the hypertriglyceridemia developed in fasted dogs who had previously been on fat-free diets, the triglyceride fatty acids (TGFA) were nondietary. These endogenous TGFA originated from adipose tissue rather than from de novo synthesis. The composition of the lipoprotein TGFA was identical to that of adipose tissue. Furthermore, nicotinic acid blocked the FFA increase and the development of the hypertriglyceridemia. However, it did not prevent the fall of PHLA. Although their TGFA were entirely nondietary, the lipoproteins in these diabetic dogs resembled chylomicrons in their electrophoretic mobility, size, density, and composition. Surgical, histological and tracer studies suggested that in addition to the liver, the intestinal mucosa makes these lipoproteins. The tracer studies also suggested that circulating FFA might enter the intestinal mucosal cells directly and be esterified.
