Synthesis, band-gap tuning, structural and optical investigations of Mg doped ZnO nanowires

Abstract: In the present investigation, synthesis, characterizations and the tuning of the optical band gap (E g) of ZnO nanowires (NWs) has been successfully achieved by introducing Mg as an intentional impurity with varying concentrations Zn 1-xMg xO (x = 0, 5, 10 and 20 at. %). Although the ionic radius of Mg 2+ (0.57 Å) is close to that of Zn 2+ (0.60 Å) the crystal structure difference and large lattice mismatch between ZnO (wurtzite, 3.25 Å) and MgO (rock salt, 4.22 Å) causes phase segregation in Zn 1-xMg xO with … Show more

“…Stubs were then tapped to remove excess sample, but they were not sputter coated. SEM/EDS imaging was conducted at 15-25kv, with magnifications of 30-500x using a FEI 200Quanta ESEM [19].…”

“…Thus far, Mgdoped ZnO nanobelts, nanowires, and nanorods have been prepared by vapor-phase transport [18], solid-state Mg diffusion to ZnO NWs [19,20], and hydrothermal growth [21], respectively. Amin et al [18] briefly investigated the effect of Mg doping on the gas-sensing characteristics of ZnO nanobelts.…”

“…However, ITO materials are expensive because of the scarcity of indium, and there is the issue of toxicity and low stability to H 2 plasma [4]. Thus by far, zinc oxide (ZnO) has been regarded as an alternative to ITO because of its enhanced electrical, optical, and mechanical properties [5][6][7][8][9][10], and is found to have potential in many optoelectronic applications [11,12]. In particular, Al-doped ZnO transparent conducting oxide thin films have been studied extensively in terms of their low cost and high conductivity [13].…”
