Synthesis, characterization and adsorption studies of an acrylic acid-grafted sodium alginate-based TiO2 hydrogel nanocomposite

Abstract: Hydrogel nanocomposites were synthesized by solution polymerization of acrylic acid in the presence of sodium alginate biopolymer and TiO 2 nanoparticle. TiO 2 nanoparticle and N,N-methylene-bisacrylamide was used as an inorganic and organic crosslinker, respectively. The structure and morphology of the nanocomposites were investigated using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-EmmettTeller (BET) and thermogravimetric analysis te… Show more

“…(iron oxide, titanium oxide), inorganic (silica, silicates), carbon nanotubes and graphene can be used with hydrogels to form hydrogel nanocomposite with improved mechanical properties and functionalities [20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27]. For example, remarkable improvements in mechanical and thermal properties were noted in hydrogel when gold nanoparticles were inserted in poly N-isopropyl amide hydrogel [28].…”

“…Hydrogels are water‐swollen 3D networks exhibiting viscoelastic properties governed by the characteristics of the subunits and the means and degree by which the subunits are bound . NP‐incorporated hydrogels are commonly prepared either by the direct addition of an aqueous NP dispersion to the polymer mixture before gel formation, or through the re‐hydration of a preformed dehydrated gel using a NP dispersion allowing NP diffusion into the swelling polymer matrix, with both methodologies providing entrapment of large masses of NPs . An alternative means of NP incorporation into a hydrogel is through the synthesis of particles within the network.…”

“…Compared to the former, natural hydrogels, e.g. gelatin [14], sodium alginate [15,16], chitosan [17] and konjac glucomannan [18], are not only rich in natural world, but also have lower toxicity, good biodegradability [19] and suitable viscosity for bio-printing [20]. Konjac glucomannan (KGM) is a natural polysaccharide consisting of β-D-glucose and β-Dmannose bound by β -1,4 glycosidic bonds at a molar ratio of 1:1.6 [21,22].…”
