Synthesis, Characterization and Properties of Soybean Oil-Based Polyurethane

Abstract: At present, the consumption of polyurethane is huge in various industries. As a result, it has become a research hotspot to use environmentally friendly and renewable bio-based raw materials (instead of petroleum-based raw materials) to prepare polyurethane. In this paper, epoxy soybean oil (ESO) was used as raw material, and polyethylene glycol (PEG-600) was used for ring opening. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) analysis proved that soybean oil-based polyester… Show more

“…Various new methods have been developed for synthesizing different types of polyester polyols with unique structures. These include Jatropha-Oil-Based Polyester Polyol 33 , Polyester Polyol from Cyclohexanone plant wash water 34 , isosorbide-based polyester polyols 35 , polyester polyol from Direct conversion of waste polyesters 36 , polyester polyol based on epoxidized soybean oil 37 , and other works reported in the literature [38][39][40] . Recent investigations on polyurethane have revealed that vegetable oil fatty acids can serve as a suitable replacement for petroleum-based raw materials [41][42][43] .…”

“…For example, Badakhshanian and Ghaemy 5 synthesized a new PU elastomer based on tragacanth gum polysaccharide. Various types of vegetable oils have been used in the preparation of bio-based PUs, such as soybean oil, 6 canola oil, 7 and castor oil (CO). 8 Vegetable oil, whose main component is straight-chain fatty acid glycerides, 9 has been used as biomass polyols.…”

“…However, there is a lack of scientific publications regarding the lifespan of PUFs where their mechanical properties are relevant, such as sandwich panels [ 6 ]. Many studies regarding the synthesis, characterizations and applications of bio-based PUFs are being carried out every year due to its pairing characteristics with oil-based foams as well as its relative low cost and eco-friendly origin [ 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ]. PUF is a two-phase material composed of a continuous polymer matrix and the gas in the discretely distributed cells.…”
