Synthesis, Crystal Structure, DNA‐binding Properties and Antioxidant Activity of a Copper(II) Complex with Naphthalimide Schiff Base

Abstract: The Schiff N‐allylamine‐4‐(ethylenediamine‐5‐methylsalicylidene)‐1,8‐naphthalimide (H2L) and its copper(II) complex, [Cu(HL)2]·0.5DMF, were synthesized and characterized. The crystal structure of the CuII complex reveals a slightly distorted square‐planar arrangement provided by two N and O donors from two deprotonated ligands. In addition, the DNA‐binding properties of the ligand and CuII complex were investigated by fluorescence spectra, electronic absorption, and viscosity measurements. The experimental stu… Show more

“…Moreover, using the same method, we compared the abilities of the compound to scavenge hydroxyl radical (OH•) with those of the well-known natural antioxidants mannitol (IC 50 = 9.6 × 10 -3 M) and vitamin C(IC 50 = 8.7 × 10 -3 M). 42,43 The results suggests that complex 1 has a higher ability to scavenge hydroxyl radical(OH•) than mannitol and vitamin C. = 6.02 × 10 -5 M) in the literature. 44,45 As a result, complex 1 can be considered as a new potential antioxidant.…”

“…About two weeks later, some bright brown block-like crystals suitable for X-ray diffraction were gained and collected carefully. Yield: 54 The synthetic route to the Cu II complex is depicted in Scheme 2. An acetone solution (3 mL) of HL 1 (10.60 mg, 0.04 mmol) was added to a methanol solution (3 mL) of Cu(OAc)2·H2O (7.96 mg, 0.04 mmol).…”
