Synthesis, in‐vitro Antimicrobial and Cytotoxic Studies of Novel Azetidinone Derivatives

Abstract: Developing novel antimicrobial drugs is increasingly important in the modern pharmaceutical industry. A series of novel 3-chloro-4-[4-(2-oxo-2H-chromen-4-ylmethoxy)phenyl]-1-phenylazetidin-2-ones 5a-o have been synthesized from 4-bromomethylcoumarins 1a-e and 4-aryliminomethyl-phenols 3a-c. These compounds were screened for their in-vitro antibacterial activity against two Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus and Vancomycin resistant enteroccoccus) and two Gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Shigella dysentery… Show more

“…To understand the role of the sidearm oxazoline in 94a during this process, Tang and co-workers 55b carried out detailed studies using 13 for C-alkylnitrones (Scheme 47). It was also confirmed that cis-β-lactams could be converted into respective trans isomers by treatment with DBU in CH 2 Cl 2 at 0ºC.…”

“…Last decade revealed interesting non-antibacterial properties of β-lactams including cholesterol-lowering effects, 8,9,10,11,12 antifungal, 13 anticancer, 14 antiviral 15 and antihyperglycemic activity. 16 Also available are numerous reports on serine protease 17,18,19 (elastase, 20 thrombin, 21 or tryptase) inhibition by certain β-lactams as well as discovery of 2-azetidinones' antagonism of vasopressin V1a receptor 22 and inhibition of HIV-1 protease 23 and β-lactamase.…”

“…[15] It is well known that bacterial resistance to existing antibiotics is increasing and therefore there is a great demand for the creation of new type of compounds bearing βlactam motif. They have also other therapeutic properties such as anti-microbial, anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, anticonvulsant, anticancer, anti-elastase, anti-viral [16] and anti-HCMV [17] activities. However, its most frequently studied feature of this heterocycle in the literature is antibacteriality.…”
