Synthesis of a new series of 2-hydroxy-5-iodo-N’-(1-arylethylidene)benzohydrazides using a deep eutectic solvent as solvent/catalyst under sonication

Abstract: We report here the preparation of 2-hydroxy-5-iodo- N ’-(1-arylethylidene)benzohydrazide compounds in good to excellent yields (83–98%) within a short reaction time (10–15 min), through a clean and efficient procedure. Seventeen new compounds were synthesized and fully characterized by FT-IR, NMR, and HRMS. The deep eutectic solvent can be recovered easily by phase extraction and can be reused up to several times without any significant loss of catalytic activity. Additionally, the metho… Show more

“…This increased yield implied that the developed DES serves not only as a solvent but also as a catalyst for the reaction. Such dual solvent/catalyst characteristics of DESs have been reported previously by several authors [55][56][57]. By heating the reaction at 50°C or subjecting the reaction to microwave irradiation, the product was successively isolated in 22% or 83% yield, respectively.…”

“…Thanks to their unique features, such as wide liquid range, biodegradability, excellent thermal stability and small vapor pressure, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been widely employed in catalytic applications and reaction media 1–4 . Compared to conventional metal halide catalysts, Lewis acidic deep eutectic solvents (LADESs) were found to have high stability and selectivity 5,6 . Recently, they have drawn the attention of the academic community because they can be employed as highly‐efficient organic synthesis media 7–9 .…”
