Synthesis of activated carbon derived from chicken feather for Li-ion batteries through chemical and physical activation process

Abstract: The use of activated carbon from biomass as an electrode for lithium-ion batteries is promising because of the low cost, natural abundance, and environmentally friendly. Chicken feather is a biomass that has the potential to be a source of activated carbon, because it contains keratin. The activation process affects the quality of activated carbon, thereby increasing battery performance. In this study, chicken feather waste was chemically activated using KOH and combined with physical activation at temperature… Show more

“…After activation, the carbons can display very high SSAs and porosity, which are essential in electrochemical applications. Depending on the starting precursor, the activation process and the chemicals used can vary, but alkali hydroxides, such as KOH or NaOH, are most widely used. , More detailed information about activation processes can be found elsewhere. , Overall, the gaseous products generated during the activation process play a crucial role in enhancing the porous structure. Simultaneously, metallic particles formed in situ become embedded in the carbon lattice, leading to the expansion of carbon lattices.…”

“…Through the processes of carbonization and activation, chicken feathers with hollow properties and helical structures can be utilized to create homogenous porous materials. Hastuti et al 159 reported a chemically activated using KOH and combined with a physical activation method to prepare porous carbon for LIBs from chicken feather waste. The high interlayer spacing, specific surface area, and structural defects contribute to the excellent electrochemical performance of Li-ion batteries.…”

“…Additionally, it contains approximately 1% fat and 8% water. Keratin is comprised of many constituents, encompassing carbon IOP Publishing doi:10.1088/1755-1315/1312/1/012018 2 (51%), nitrogen (17%), oxygen (21%), hydrogen (6%), and sulphur (5%), alongside small quantities of iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), and other elements [7]. The potential utilization of biomass waste derived from feathers has been explored as an attractive option to produce carbon dots.…”
