Synthesis of Adaptive Polymer Brushes via “Grafting To” Approach from Melt

Abstract: We report a simple method to synthesize binary polymer brushes from two incompatible polymers of different polarity. The synthetic route is based on a subsequent step-by-step grafting of carboxyl-terminated polystyrene and poly(2-vinylpyridine) to the surface of a Si wafer functionalized with 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane. The end-functional polymers were spin-coated on the substrate, and grafting was carried out at a temperature higher than the glass transition temperature of the polymers. The composition… Show more

“…However in these processes, the physically adsorbed polymer films can be easily desorbed or delaminated from the surface under unfavorable conditions. a e-mail: radvincula@uh.edu "Grafting to" [10] and "grafting from" (or surfaceinitiated polymerization (SIP)) [11,12] have also become popular techniques in preparing polymer coatings on surfaces. These techniques are based on tethering polymers on surfaces by either using a preformed polymer with an active end group to attach to the surface, in the case of "grafting to" technique, or by growing polymers in situ from surface-bound initiators, in the case of SIP [1].…”

“…Depending on the solvent to which the brush is exposed, either the hydrophilic or the hydrophobic polymer extends into the solvent while the other polymer component resides near to the solid. Thus, the system's surface properties are reversibly switchable by dipping them into solvents of different polarity and drying [8][9][10][11][12].…”
