Synthesis of biodegradable PVA/cellulose polymer composites and their application in dye removal

Abstract: Environmentally sustainable composite films were synthesized using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and cellulose. Cellulose was extracted from the Agro-waste (sugarcane bagasse) using chemical pre-treatment followed by the acid-hydrolysis process. The composites were also used for the treatment of dye (Methylene blue; MB and Crystal violet dye; CV) and it was observed that the removal capacity of PVA/C was 70% for CV and 64.5% for MB dye. The biodegradation study of these composite films was also carried out using bac… Show more

“…Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a well‐known, human skin‐compatible, and environment‐friendly polymer that is water‐soluble, easy to form, non‐toxic, and biodegradable. [ 1,2 ] To achieve ecological sustainability, PVA has been widely studied for compositing with natural fillers, such as chitosan, [ 3–5 ] cellulose, [ 6–8 ] and starch. [ 9–11 ] Furthermore, PVA composites have been successfully used for drug delivery, contact lenses, filtration materials, and membrane formation.…”

“…PVA wastewater materials have become a serious threat to environmental safety. It causes various health issues because it enhances the heavy materials metals mobilization from the rock and sediment to oceans, which results in the accommodation of heavy materials [5]. The degradation of PVA by microorganisms is not benefi cial because it is a slow process.…”
