Synthesis of Biosafe Hydroxy Derivatives of the Potentially Antitumor Drug Artemisinin by Basidiomycetes

Abstract

The processes of hydroxylation of a potentially antitumor artemisinin preparation by basidiomycetes were studied. The fungi were grown on sucrose-malt broth in the presence of artemisinin, for 14 days. The transformation products were extracted with ethyl acetate. The extracts were analyzed by HPLC. Each culture of fungy had transforms artemisinin into a single metabolite. The transformation products were identified using mass spectrometry and NMR methods. 5hydroxyartemisinin was isolated from the incubation medium Pycnoporus sanguineus in a yield of 92.1% and 7-hydroxyartemimizinin was isolated from the incubation medium Funalia trogii in 89.7% yield.
