utilization of critical elements in coal-bearing sequences are the research frontiers and hot points of coal geology and its related research fields in recent ten years. Significant advances including the deposit discoveries, modes of occurrences, the source, migration, enrichment and preservation of ore-forming materials, evaluation of the development and utilization potential, research and development of precise and meticulous exploration technologies, and methods of separations and extraction of critical elements from coal-bearing sequences have been obtained by domestic and international scholars. These have built solid theoretical and technical bases for the exploitation and utilization of critical metal mineral resources in coal-bearing sequences. At the same time, a great advance of answering important earth scientific questions related to critical elements in coal-bearing sequences has been achieved. In this paper, we have summarized advances of researches on the mineralization of critical elements (mainly Ge, Ga, Li, Nb and Zr, among others) in coal-bearing sequences in recent years, and have pointed out the existed questions in previous researches and their corresponding resolving programs and ideas in the future.
