Synthesis of Brazilian Collembola: an update to the species list

Abstract: The current total number of species found in Brazil is 270, distributed in 19 families and 92 genera, an increase of 71 species and 12 genera in the last 6 years. The greatest known diversity is found in Rio de Janeiro (132 species), Amazonas (56), Espírito Santo (30) and São Paulo (28), while there are no record to seven Brazilian states (Acre, Alagoas, Distrito Federal, Goiás, Rio Grande do Norte, Roraima and Tocantins). Distribution of the records clearly defines the areas that urge investments in scientifi… Show more

“…It will provide a starting point for understanding the diversity of this group, as has been done for other geopolitical regions (e.g. Culik and Zeppelini 2003, Abrantes et al 2010, 2012), and will assist South Africa to meet its obligations under the Convention on Biological Diversity (see for example Aichi Target 9 on identifying invasive alien species, and Aichi Target 17 on a national biodiversity strategy, http://www.cbd.int/sp/targets). …”

“…similis Folsom, but none has been cited from ant nests in Brazil until now. There are only 3 other springtail species recorded from ant nests (without citation of the ant species) in Brazil: Mastigoceras camponoti Handschin, Seira edmanni (Stach) and Cyphoderodes xenopus Börner, and all of them are springtail species originally described from Brazil (Abrantes et al 2010). Mastigoceras camponoti has been recorded in tropical rain forests in the states of Minas Gerais, Manaus and Rio de Janeiro (Stach 1935;Cassagnau & Oliveria 1992) and from Caatinga vegetation (xerophytic thorn woodlands) in Ceará state, northeastern Brazil (Palacios-Vargas unpublished data).…”

Cyphoderodes xenopus is the only species of the genus known in the New World at this moment and the type material was collect in São Leopoldo, state of Rio Grande do Sul.…”
