Synthesis of carbohydrate-based artificial siderophores and their biological applications

Abstract: During the last decade a series of synthetic siderophores based on monosaccharides has emerged. Such compounds bear ligands of the catecholate and hydroxamate (normal and retro) family and were built around methyl a-D-glucopyranoside, methyl a-D-galactopyranoside, methyl a-D-ribopyranoside and methyl a-D-xylopyranoside. Studies in Gram-negative bacteria and mycobacteria have proven that they can act as effective artificial siderophores.
