Synthesis of carbon quantum dots to fabricate ultraviolet‐shielding poly(vinylidene fluoride) films

Abstract: The paper presents a simple and effective approach to fabricating a poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) film with excellent ultraviolet (UV) shielding performance. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with a highly UV absorbing property were made via a hydrothermal reaction and were then added to a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) solution. The PVDF membrane pretreated with an alkaline solution was immersed in the prepared CQD/PVA solution to coat a UV‐shielding layer on the film surface. “…Among the most popular materials for combination with PVDF is carbon. There are many papers focusing on the creation of hybrid composite films from PVDF and carbon [8], to use with carbon quantum dots for creation of films [9], or to use carbon with PVDF to improve its piezoelectric properties [10,11]. The focus of this paper is, however, not on films, but rather on PVDF fibers, and their combination with carbon.…”

“…Dong et al prepared CQDs by hydrothermal reaction. It was added to the PVA solution, and the poly (vinylidene fluoride) film pretreated with an alkaline solution was immersed in the prepared CQD/PVA solution, to coat the surface of the film with a UV-shielding layer, and the composite film could shield the UV light completely [39]. El-Shamy et al successfully fabricated novel P-type thermoelectric PVA/CQDs nanocomposite films through the solution casting technique.…”

“…[28][29][30][31][32] However, very few attentions have been paid to the modication of the chemical structure and the tuning of the PL of CDs using UV light photoreactions. [33][34][35] In this work, effect of UV light (365 nm) irradiation on the chemical structure and the PL property of CDs is investigated. Aer being irradiated by UV light, the PL intensity of CDs is obviously increases and blue shied in the UV region, while that in the visible region decreased.…”
