Synthesis of Conjugated Main-Chain Ferrocene-Containing Polymers through Melt-State Polymerization

Abstract: Two kinds of conjugated main-chain ferrocene (Fc)-containing polymers, PFcT8 and PFcTP8, were successfully prepared through the facile melt-state polymerization (MSP) of corresponding monomers which combine the Fc motif with thiophene or thiophene-methane groups. The simple, low-cost MSP was chosen as the method, while thiophene or thiophene-methane groups served as reactive sites for its feature of easy polymerization by a simple heating process. The prepared metallopolymers were characterized by 1H NMR, FTIR… Show more

“…[29] Fc-CPs are widely used as functional materials with interesting magnetic, optical, and redox properties. [29][30][31][32][33] Fc itself offers synthetic route diversity, interesting redox behavior, [34][35][36] and can be easily functionalized by substitution at cyclopentadienyl rings. [35] Thus, the properties of the modified complex can be precisely controlled to allow diverse applications.…”

“…Since its discovery in 1951, Fc and its derivatives have been extensively studied [29] . Fc‐CPs are widely used as functional materials with interesting magnetic, optical, and redox properties [29–33] . Fc itself offers synthetic route diversity, interesting redox behavior, [34–36] and can be easily functionalized by substitution at cyclopentadienyl rings [35] .…”

“…4 However, current approaches to including ferrocene in the main-chain have included metathesis polymerization, 5,6 ring opening polymerization, 7 and melt polymerization. 8 The large variety and scope of ferrocene containing polymers has led to extensive studies in their applications. Ferrocene-based hyperbranched poly(phenyltriazolylcarboxylates) 9 and ferrocenecontaining polycarbosilazanes 10 have been studied as precursors in magnetoceramics.…”
